SMSC

At the Cromwell Learning Community Multi Academy Trust we believe that learning without limits means we do not put a ceiling on children’s personal or academic achievement. Our unique curriculum creates opportunities for the personal development of all pupils. The PSHE curriculum incorporates British Values, Relationships and Health Education and we celebrate cultural diversity through Heritage lessons and Black History Month. The RE curriculum follows the Birmingham Agreed Syllabus and our Collective Worship reflects our diverse school community.

Our Curriculum and Enrichment activities support learners to develop their character, including their resilience, confidence and independence as well as supporting their physical, social, and emotional development. We use questionnaires and conversations to promote the use of ‘pupil voice’ to improve our provision both within the curriculum and extra-curricular activities. Our pupils are given the opportunity to learn about the multi-cultural and diverse community in which they live which helps them to respect and celebrate differences.

What is SMSC?

The spiritual development of pupils is shown by their:

  • ability to be reflective about their own beliefs (religious or otherwise) and perspective on life
  • knowledge of, and respect for, different people’s faiths, feelings and values
  • sense of enjoyment and fascination in learning about themselves, others and the world around them
  • use of imagination and creativity in their learning
  • willingness to reflect on their experiences

The moral development of pupils is shown by their:

  • ability to recognise the difference between right and wrong and to readily apply this understanding in their own lives, recognise legal boundaries and, in so doing, respect the civil and criminal law of England
  • understanding of the consequences of their behaviour and actions
  • interest in investigating and offering reasoned views about moral and ethical issues and ability to understand and appreciate the viewpoints of others on these issues.

The social development of pupils is shown by their:

  • use of a range of social skills in different contexts, for example working and socialising with other pupils, including those from different religious, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds
  • willingness to participate in a variety of communities and social settings, including by volunteering, cooperating well with others and being able to resolve conflicts effectively
  • acceptance and engagement with the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs; they develop and demonstrate skills and attitudes that will allow them to participate fully in and contribute positively to life in modern Britain.

The cultural development of pupils is shown by their:

  • understanding and appreciation of the wide range of cultural influences that have shaped their own heritage and that of others
  • understanding and appreciation of the range of different cultures in the school and further afield as an essential element of their preparation for life in modern Britain
  • ability to recognise, and value, the things we share in common across
cultural, religious, ethnic and socio-economic communities
  • knowledge of Britain’s democratic parliamentary system and its central role in shaping our history and values, and in continuing to develop Britain
  • willingness to participate in and respond positively to artistic, musical, sporting and cultural opportunities
  • interest in exploring, improving understanding of and showing respect for different faiths and cultural diversity and the extent to which they understand, accept and respect diversity. This is shown by their respect and attitudes towards different religious, ethnic and socio-economic groups in the local, national and global communities

At CLC MAT, we support the ‘whole child’ through a variety of activities, some of these include:

-The CRC Project (Confident Resilient Children) The Choices project in Years 5 and 6 is led by Titan Partnership. This on-going project has supported our children in developing their resilience, particularly online; the project has also supported the children through mentoring sessions.

-‘Just 3 Clicks’ :This project by Recre8 in Years 5 and 6 is a five week participatory programme which uses drama in education techniques and psychology exercises to explore the notion of extremism and the radicalisation of young people.

-Afternoon Tea:  All children in the school have the opportunity to attend the session with the Executive Head teacher to discuss and share their experiences and enable their ‘voices’ to be heard.

-Elected School Councillors: During Parliament week, the school runs elections, children write manifestos and voting takes place in booths to elect the school council representatives from Years 1 to 6.

-School Councillors visit the Houses of Parliament: The school Councillors visit the House of Commons and the House of Lords to look at how laws are made and take part in debating.

-Animal Monitors: Children throughout the school  learn about caring for animals  by looking after the animals in our school, this helps them to develop empathy.

-Pupils Wellbeing Ambassadors: Pupils are selected for their leadership qualities and their ability to empathise with their peers, they are trained to deliver activities at lunchtimes which include playing board games and sports activities.

-Birmingham City Mission Assemblies: Each term visitors from BCM share stories with our pupils through ART.

-School of Sanctuary: We have received the School of Sanctuary award for raising awareness about refugees through curriculum activities and enrichment experiences.

-Yoga / Well-being sessions: Pupils take part in mindfulness activities through Yoga to help them learn strategies which can help them to feel calm and relaxed.

-Ackers Adventure-Team Building Sessions: Pupils in Key Stage 2 took part in Team Building, Bushcraft and Archery.

-Year 6 Enterprise Project: Year 6 participate in an enterprise project with a local business where they develop their business skills. Pupils design a product and market it to a group of representatives from local businesses.
